Caribbean businesses, GO HARD! Make the tough times work for you
Caribbean businesses are faced with a major challenge; less money is available than in the years gone.
So basically, what CEO’s and other business owners would say is “we need more money to do more; until we can, we are cutting back.” Cutting back on the money you spend is sometimes your only choice if you have zero dollars. While your company will benefit from strategic cash injections; pumping money into your business is not the same thing as creating more value. Your opportunity is now to make more of your limited resources and rally your team to do more to create value.
For the businesses that are product based the value created may be in the way the product is delivered and the clients’ ability to make the product more useful to them than originally intended. Getting your team involved is a great way to create value; they know the customers, they know the product; help them do their part as you progress as a team. Reward their great initiatives and encourage the weaker performers on the team. The workforce tends to challenge Caribbean-run businesses; it is a known fact, my suggestion: go ahead and lead by example. They believe that we cannot expect of them what we are not willing to give; give them your best genuinely and remove the “they” and “we”.
With service based companies, we are empowered to rise in this recession by continuing to give more value for the 2011 dollar. People are looking for more and we can give it to them by just spending a few extra minutes listening. By asking the questions: “Is there anything that would help you do this better?” AND “Would you like me to pass by and help you ensure that all works as you expected?” … Giving excellent work and reminding yourself to give the client more than they expect…
Maybe I am telling you to do the impossible but who ever made anything working by doing the common? Accept the challenge and be resilient in a time that makes it very easy for you to fail; be successful. I continue to believe that the Caribbean has a lot to offer to the world; however we need to start by offering it to ourselves and making the best of what we do.
Be excellent and always give people more than they expect!
