How to avoid failure with Social Media Marketing

Written By on March 14th, 2011

All organizations are different, because of the different combinations of people, resources, ideas and other factors. This means that we can achieve business goals without utilizing the traditional “crab in barrel” kill the competition strategy. More specifically, Caribbean companies who utilize social media as a powerful low cost method of marketing can ensure they do not shoot themselves in their foot. Read on.

Traditionally, Caribbean companies have seen marketing as a means to compete or “show better” than the competition. This is beneficial but is materialized in such a limited way; you see they are not better at being their competitors but great at being themselves. However, instead of highlighting the unique benefits of their brands, services and products they focus on “outdoing” the same factors of their competitors. So what happens is, you see companies with value in great customer service or excellent quality products and delivery, coming around and claiming to be the “best price” or most affordable. Anyone sees the problem?

It is stupid, isn’t it? We can learn from everything; right?

Social Media platforms enable companies and empower the public. Companies can now participate in a two way communication/conversations with the people interested in their brands, and the people can now be better informed on the brands they have access to. Your opportunity to speak directly with potential customers should not be wasted; spend time introducing your unique benefit.  You will fail if you cannot deliver on your representation of yourself; customers relay their experiences with companies through social media channels now more than ever. Don’t be stupid; be yourself and use some advice that always works, “if you want to surprise customers, give more value than they expect”.
